Where we work

BURKINA FASO

UNCDF has been present in Burkina Faso since 1981, providing support to meet development objectives through several projects focusing on inclusive finance and local development.

Today, UNCDF offers catalytic finance models that unlock public and private resources in “last mile” environments, especially at the domestic level, to reduce poverty and support local economic development.

Through Financial Inclusion, UNCDF is implementing MicroLead; a global initiative that works with a variety of financial institutions aiming to develop, pilot and scale deposit services for low-income, rural populations, particularly women. Burkina Faso is also one of the countries where UNCDF implements its YouthStart programme; a global initiative to increase access to financial services for low-income youth, with an emphasis on savings and financial education.

Additionally, UNCDF is implementing the Programme d’Appui au financement adapté à l’Agriculture familiale (AgriFinance) to improve access to financial services specifically adapted to the needs of small producers or actors of value chain of rice, tomatoes and cowpea. By facilitating access to financial services adapted to the needs of stakeholders in the three streams, the programme is helping improve food security, self-employment of young people, and securing income in rural areas, especially for women.

Through Local Development Finance, UNCDF is implementing Local Cross-Border Initiative (LOBI), which strengthens cross-border governance in West Africa by defining regional and national strategies and promoting pilot cross-border local development processes.
