UNCDF has been present in Samoa since 2008, urging active financial involvements of underrepresented groups in areas where financial services tend to be limited.

Today, UNCDF offers “last mile” finance models that unlock public and private resources, especially at the domestic level, to reduce poverty and support local economic development.

Through our Inclusive Digital Economies Practice, UNCDF implemented Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme (PFIP), which promoted financial inclusion through innovative and technology driven models, such as mobile money. Such financial models enable low-income households and other underserved groups, especially women, to participate in formal financial system, thereby enabling inclusive financial growth in Samoa. The work UNCDF conducted in Samoa under PFIP has informed our new interventions within the Pacific Digital Economy Programme (PDEP), which is funded by the Australian government and administered by UNCDF, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
