Community facilitators of Wailevu, Savusavu in Fiji undergo a mobile money training to understand how to use the platform, its benefits and how to register customers on this mobile money platform. The Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme(PFIP) is working with Vodafone Fiji’s MPAISA and Digicel Mobile Money to introduce the mobile money service in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and PNG. To date these services has registered over 450,000 clients across five countries.

Through UNCDF’s partnership with Fiji’s Department of Social Welfare, Westpac Banking Corporation and AusAid Fiji, over 20,000 unbanked social welfare beneficiaries can now access their benefits via no cost convenient bank accounts. Benefits were previously accessed via a costly and inconvenient voucher-based system. Through UNCDF’s Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme (PFIP), Westpac banking staff delivers client orientation training and demonstrates the use of an Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale machine to social welfare clients – some of whom are using this form of electronic banking for the very first time.

Mobile Money services in the Pacific have registered over 450,000 clients across five countries through Digicel Pacific’s Mobile Money and Vodafone Fiji’s MPAiSA. These services launched in 2010 is supported by UNCDF’s Pacific Financial Inclusion joint Programme (PFIP) and has provided Pacific Islanders with a lower cost, secure means to transfer or store money domestically, pay shopping and utility bills and since 2011 receive international remittances.

Most recently Vodafone Fiji’s M-PAiSA has partnered with SPDB Fiji (South Pacific Development Bank) and LICI Fiji (Life Insurance Corporation of India) to enable its customers to repay their microloans and insurance premiums. UNCDF’s Pacific Financial Inclusion joint Programme (PFIP) has provided funding to Vodafone Fiji to enable up to 300,000 customers to inexpensively make and receive payments through their mobile phones through the first mobile money system in the Pacific. M-PAiSA is modeled on Safaricom Kenya’s M-Pesa service, but built by Vodafone Fiji locally. Since launch, M-PAiSA has enrolled over 300,000 customers.
