Le Défi

With a population of more than 36 million and a real GDP growth rate of 7 percent over the decade 2000 to 2010, Tanzania is one of the fastest-growing economies in sub-Saharan Africa. However, strong growth has failed to produce any significant reduction in poverty, which remains concentrated in rural areas. The country ranks 152nd out of 187 countries in the 2012 Human Development Index.

Que fait l'UNCDF pour aider ?

UNCDF is participating in a Joint Programme to support the government of Tanzania in three main areas: promotion of Local Economic Development in Tanzania mainland, support for development of a National Strategy for Financial Inclusion in Zanzibar, and enhancement of local government alternative sources of funds to finance local infrastructure. 

In Tanzania, UNCDF is also implementing its Gender Equitable Development (GELD) programme, which aims at strengthening local government’s capacities in gender planning and budgeting, and – in partnership with ICLD – the International Joint Training Programme to Strengthen Local Government in Support of Local Development in Southern and Eastern Africa, which aims at enhancing capacity of the local governments to support sustainable local development, poverty reduction and the achievement of the MDGs. 

In inclusive finance, the UNCDF Least Developed Countries Fund for savings-led market leaders for inclusive finance (MicroLead) is operational in Tanzania, which aims to increase access to financial services for low-income populations in LDCs.

One UN Joint Programme - Transition from Humanitarian Assistance to Sustainable Development in North Western Tanzania
Pourquoi To support the LED, Inclusive Finance in Zanzibar, and local infrastructures financing.

Local Finance Initiative (LFI)
Pourquoi To enable and promote inclusive and sustainable local economic development (LED) and private sector development (PSD)
COMMENT
  • By strengthening domestic finance in local economies through both traditional basic infrastructure and industrial infrastructure projects such as energy, transport, warehouses, industrial pools, logistic platforms, food processing plants, etc.;
  • By developing capacities through training of local Technical Support Providers, national and local government officials, bank officers, and project sponsors; and
  • By providing enabling-information resources and scalable communication and management platforms using basic on-line technologies.
