With only five years to go until the 2015 deadline, many countries are off track to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Progress is further threatened by the effects of the global economic crisis and the challenges of climate change, with the least developed and fragile states facing particular vulnerabilities.
As central governments wrestle with multiple and growing challenges, local governments could play a significant role in accelerating progress toward the MDGs. What are the keys to unleashing their development potential?
The Global Forum on Local Development: Pursuing the MDGs through Local Government is a high-level event being convened by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Uganda, and supported by a wide range of partners. It will look at the role of local governments in fighting poverty, promoting local development and accelerating progress toward the MDGs. What concrete steps can local governments take - in partnership with central authorities, the private sector and communities - to advance the MDG agenda? The Global Forum will bring together Heads of state and Government Ministers, as well as representatives of the donor community, international organizations, local governments, local government associations, academia, civil society and the private sector for three days of discussion and debate.
The Forum's participants include national governments, local governments, civil society, local government associations, donor partners, and researchers. While geographic representation will focus primarily on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), there will be several representatives from non-least developed countries sharing their insightful experiences in promoting local development through local government.
