Forwarding the flame of resilience: Blended finance investment for women’s economic empowerment towards post-poverty

A group of vulnerable women received cash support for savings and training on sewing. It was not adequate because they could not use their skills. Economic shocks (flood, cyclone) in one of the most climate vulnerable districts of Bangladesh, Satkhira, make modest cash savings inadequate and tend to push them below poverty line. Sustainable income is essential for these vulnerable women to survive despite all odds.
UNCDF invested initiation grants in a social enterprise, Shu-Fashion Mini Garments (SHUNIPUN) that has unlocked equity from SHUSHILON (the sponsor NGO), CSR fund, bank loan and helped set up the first mini garments locally. Breaking away from traditional export-targeting large readymade garments in big cities, this mini garment has targeted local consumers, the burgeoning middle class of Bangladesh. With two other sister agencies, UNDP and UNWOMEN, this investment has ushered in an era of local development where local government bodies (upazila and union parishads) helped in this initiative. Many of the women workers, 68 in number, belong to minority groups (LNOB) with the dream of transformation from poverty to post-poverty and sustainable resilience.
