On a busy street in the bustling Sinza area in the city of Dar es Salaam, there is a small and ambitious company by the name of Consumers Choice Limited (CCL). The company’s mission is to provide bioethanol fuel and cookstoves to growing households in the city’s low-income areas.
“From the sugar cane and molasses at the beginning of the distillery process to the women’s group raising awareness on clean cooking energy, every process is conducted within Tanzania’s borders. We get to work with both locally owned companies and organisations, small-scale merchants, and individuals,” remarked Isack Danford, Sales and Distribution Manager at Consumers Choice Limited.
The company uses community-based initiatives as a tool in the movement towards increasing the capacity of vulnerable Tanzanians to adopt sustainable cooking practices. Through the committed action of active community members many homes in Dar es Salaam, despite their economic status, can now be counted on in the fight against climate change through the bioethanol stove in their kitchen. One such case is that of Mama Issa, a mother of three residing in Kimara, over 16 kilometres from the city centre, her life was touched and inexplicably changed by the transformative flame of the bioethanol stove.
Mama Issa's daily cooking routine, like many in her community, was marked by the familiar scent of burning wood. She navigated through the challenges of providing meals for her family using traditional cooking methods. Her husband, Juma, worked in a small retail store in the busy Kariakoo market - one day he came across advertisements for Moto Safi bioethanol stoves. Intrigued by the potential benefits of these stoves backed by a promise of safety, cleanliness, and convenience, Juma decided to bring this innovative cooking solution home as a gift for his wife. With the stove in hand, he sought to ease the challenges Mama Issa faced in the kitchen.
The introduction of the Moto Safi bioethanol stove into her modest kitchen unveiled a new chapter, one marked by warmth, convenience, and a departure from the strains that accompanied traditional stoves. Juma’s thoughtful decision not only brightened their kitchen but also ignited a journey toward cleaner and more sustainable living in the heart of Kimara.
“Aleleleleleleleeeii!!” the air was filled with the sounds of ululation as Mama Issa’s eyes sparkled with the reflection of the flame flickering from the new Moto Safi bioethanol stove on her soot-stained kitchen floor. As the flames flickered to life, so did a profound change in Mama Issa's daily life. No longer did she grapple with the crackling sounds of burning wood. The assurance of safety, coupled with the absence of any soot, elevated the bioethanol stove beyond a mere kitchen appliance it became an integral part of her home, illuminating the heart of her household.
