This session demonstrates how FinTech can promote the Sustainable Development Goals in some of the toughest markets in ASEAN. The private sector was challenged to come up with innovative business model solutions to improve women’s financial inclusion in Cambodia, Myanmar, Lao and Viet Nam.

SESSION OVERVIEW

In 2017, UNCDF’s Shaping Inclusive Finance Transformations (SHIFT) programme undertook in-depth analysis on the ASEAN remittance market. As a result, it was found that there is an estimated US$6-17 billion in unregulated remittance inflows into Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Viet Nam (CLMV). In order to shift this informal market towards the formal, UNCDF SHIFT launched a Challenge Fund, providing risk capital as co-investment for innovations in the remittance space.

In this session, UNCDF SHIFT will discuss the relevance of FinTech in promoting innovative low-cost remittance options and impacting financial inclusion more broadly. In addition, the four organisations selected by UNCDF’s Challenge Fund on Remittances will present their winning business models.
