In Gambia, UNCDF LoCAL in collaboration with The Ministry of Lands and Regional Government Services (MoLRGS) had a sensitization in Central Region River (CRR) to launch the JSF/LoCAL programme. The launch of the programme took place in Janjanburreh, Central River Region on the 2nd of July 2019.

LoCAL-The Gambia is one of three components of the Jobs, Skills and Finance (JSF) for Women and Youth in The Gambia programme funded by the 11th European Development Fund. The programme aims to help stabilize the country’s economic, social and security situation during its democratic transition by facilitating the social inclusion and employment of youth and women, with a specific emphasis on promoting gender equality and addressing climate change.

The Guest of Honor at the launch was the Governor of CRR, HON. Sheriff Abba Sanyang. The event was also graced by the presence of Mr Ebrimmah Sawaneh, The Director of Community Development, Rebecca Simms, The Programme Manager for UNCDF in The Gambia, CEOs of CRR North and South and ward councilors across the region.

During the launch, participants were taken through the whole JSF/LoCAL design including Minimum conditions, menu of investment and roles and responsibilities of the various stakeholders. In his remarks, the Guest of Honor, indicated that lack of knowledge on issues of climate change could affect the Ward Development Committee (WDC) to select projects that are relevant to the menus. He also urged WDC to work with relevant sectors on climate change such as Department of Water Resources, National Disaster Management Agency and Forestry to identify projects that are in line with the menu as well as their strategic plan.

The sensitization was also attended by Reliance Financial Services and Qmoney who are partners to provide financial education and other services in the LoCAL programme.

During the launch, 4 wards were selected from both CRR North and CRR South. The wards include Nyangbantang, Banni, Janjanburreh and Dankuku. These are new wards that will be supported by the LoCAL programme in 2019/2020.
